February 2017 Cost Forum Available

From the President:

We are back after a brief hiatus for the Holidays! We are looking forward to bringing some new and exciting programs this year, while still delivering top quality technical content. We are continually looking for feedback, so please email or call me with any suggestions for programming that would interest you!

We had over 30 people in attendance at the Holiday Party at Bobby Van's Steakhouse in December. Many thanks go to Jill Hubbard for planning some great trivia, games, and fabulous prizes. At this event, we gave out our year end awards for "Member of the Year" and "Firm of the Year" to John Buonagurio and MBP. John is a Senior Associate at Exponent and is our current Communications Chair. He has been critical in the development and maintenance of our new website (www.aacei-ncs.org), in addition to the management of the email, event management and payment platforms, and has assisted AACEI regionally with the planning and web duties of the 4th Annual Northeast Total Cost Management Symposium. We would like to recognize MBP as "Firm of the Year" for their continued commitment to the National Capital Section. They encourage volunteering, as three of our board members are employed by MBP, and they promote continued education to all of their employees, who regularly fill the seats at our monthly programs. They have also graciously allowed us to use their training room and technology to host multiple meetings this year and support our webinar platform to reach those who cannot attend in person.

Without the efforts of these volunteers, we would not be able to function. If you or someone in your organization would like to get involved, please email me or give me a call. The commitment can be as large or as small as your schedule permits, and It is a great leadership and networking opportunity, plus you earn credits for re-certification.

Please join us and colleagues from around the region on March 23-24, 2017 in Philadelphia at the  4th Annual Northeast Total Cost Management Symposium. Two full days of workshops and presentations providing attendees with the latest ideas and innovations from across the Total Cost Management spectrum: cost, estimating, risk, scheduling, claims. This symposium provides a unique opportunity to network with owners, executives, managers, engineers and other industry professionals, while accessing the premium content of our technical program. Discounted Early Registration is live now, with the price increasing on March 1, 2017. Register Today! For sponsorship, group sales or presentation opportunities, please send an email to aacei.ne.symposium@gmail.com.

Finally, I would like to introduce two program concepts that we will be utilizing this year. The first is the "Building Business" Series, where we will interview local business leaders in our industry, to have them share how they got their start, some of the challenges they overcame, and to explore some lessons learned in the process. We will try to gain insights from those who have demonstrated success in our field for those who are just starting out, those who have been in it for a while, or those who are looking to build their own business. Our first program in this series will be on February 21, 2017, where Charlie Bolyard will share how he and his partners have built MBP into a firm that is regularly featured on the local and national "Best Places to Work" lists year in and year out since 1989.

The second concept will be our "AACE Insiders" Series, where we will invite management and controls teams of local and national agencies, contractors, owners, and major programs or projects to give us a look behind the scenes of the tools, practices and standards of how these organizations operate and deliver the local, regional and nationally significant work that surrounds us in this area, and how we as consultants can best support them. Our first program in this series will be in April with the team from DC Water and how they have supported the 10 year, $3.8 billion Clean Rivers Program.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or feedback, and I look forward to connecting with you in 2017!
